POTATO CHIPS AND MATH !

Hi guys, welcome back to my website. Today we are finding out if there is any relation between potato chips and math.

Potato chips were introduced in 1849 and the commercial production is assumed to begun from 1853. Why we are eating these chips without being hungry, why these chips are packed with gases, what is the aerodynamic importance of shape of these potato chips. Lets find out..

Potato chips and math

We all must have thought of the fact that the chips have a special shape. If we look into the speciality of its shape, we know that the chips are having a curve. A U-shaped and an inverted U-shape at  perpendicular to it, we can conclude its shape like this. If we take the U shaped part as positive and inverted U shaped as negative,  then if we try to break these chips we cannot predict its path we will get only two random shapes. If we apply some pressure we can  observe that the pressure get distributed.

HISTORY OF POTATO CHIPS

During the second world war potato chips were labelled as non - essential food and after than a boom occured in that industry.

The reason behind the fact that we are getting addicted to chips is that it feels good, but in fact  the ingredients in these chips are not good for our body.

HYPERBOLIC PARABOLOID

Potato chips have hyperbolic paraboloid geometry. The specialty of this shape is that we can get maximum strength from minimum matter. We all have seen that curved substance have more strength that its flat shape. Lets take the example of aluminium, we know that aluminium is not a very hard substance,  but due to the curve shape aluminium cans have greater strength than the sheets. Same is the fact in case of eggs.

Hyperbolic Paraboloid; potato chips and math

The main problem faced by the manufacturers is during the transportation of these chips and their aerodynamic behavior. The chips should produce a craunchy feel to the customers and also the ingredients must ignite the taste buds  even if it is not chewed. The hyperbolic paraboloid shape gives a solution to many of these queries.

HEDONIC HYPERPHAGIA

The psychological phase by which we are eating food by an addiction is called hydonic hyperphagia. Potato chips also leads to this situation and causes obesity and other  problems.

IMPORTANCE OF NITROGEN IN CHIPS PACKETS

The potato chips are filled with air because we all know that potato chips contain fatty acid and this gets contaminated by the presence of oxygen, to avoid this and as a preservative  chips are filled in nitrogen gas, this also gives a bulging to the packet and helps in transportation and has a glace look , appears to be bigger and attract the consumers.

Now, we came to know about a mathematical geometry which was used brilliantly by the manufacturers.
